About Gus - Cerebellar Hypoplasia | |
|
|
Meet Gus! This very special guy is sweet, spunky, and full of energy. Gus loves toys (especially noisy ones), other cats, and attention from his favorite people. He is vocal and loves to chat!
Gus is like all other kittens in many ways, but gets around a bit differently than most. Gus has cerebellar hypoplasia (CH), which is commonly referred to as "wobbly cat" syndrome. CH is commonly caused by the the feline panleukopenia virus infecting the mother cat while she is pregnant, which affects the developing cerebellum of the kittens. Other causes include physical trauma or malnutrition to the kitten in the womb, as well as other brain-related infections like toxoplasmosis, but these are much less common.
CH is not contagious. It is non-progressive, meaning it will not get worse, and does not require medication or special medical care, just thoughtful surroundings. Gus is resilient and has adapted to his condition, scooting around and relying mostly on his front legs. His back legs are strong, but he has less control over them. Gus will have a full, high-quality life, but he does need a home willing to make a few accommodations for his safety and comfort, such as:
A stable, cat-safe space with minimal tall furniture he could fall from
Easy-access litter boxes with high traction or low sides
Soft landing spots, rugs, or non-slip mats
No stairs, or the ability to block his access to stairs
A family that understands his mobility needs and celebrates his differences
The ideal home for Gus will have experience with CH or in caring for special needs animals. The adoption process for this sweet boy will require two meetings - a preliminary meeting at or near his foster home in Akron for potential adopters to get to know him, and a home visit to ensure safe surroundings in his new home.
Gus' adoption fee of $150 includes negative test for Feline Leukemia (FELV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), neuter surgery, feline leukemia, FVRCP, and Rabies vaccines, de-worming, topical flea protection, and a microchip.
